Luke 9: 59 He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” (NIV)
Jesus invited a man to follow him. That man had an excuse. He wanted to first bury his father then follow. But Jesus said, "Let the dead bury their own dead..." These seem like harsh words and we must be careful as we read them. Jesus, who knows and understands our hearts, saw that this man's love for his father prevented him from following. We must be careful that our love for parents, spouse, children or friends have not become so idolatrous that it undermines the work of Christ.
The Lesson: Luke 9:59-60
1. Why did Jesus invite this man? v. 59
2. Did Jesus misread this disciple?
3. Was Jesus asking too much of this disciple? Of you? v.60
4. What was the condition of this man's family? v.60
Applications:
1. To follow means to love, obey, witness and suffer. (Mt. 11:29; 1 Peter 2:20-21)
2. You must follow immediately. (Lk. 14:26-27; Mk. 10:28-30; 2 Tim. 2:24-26)
3. Remember, first things first. (Mk. 1:17-18; Jn. 4:34; Jn. 9:4)
